Driving after an accident: the way back
Two things at once
After an accident there are usually two issues: physical capacity and the memory of the event. Both need time, but not the same treatment.
Before the first drive
Check with your doctor whether driving is possible and to what extent. Where there are restrictions, the road traffic office decides whether conditions apply to your licence.
The first session
We do not drive to the accident site straight away. We start on quiet roads, short trips, with a clear end point. If the memory comes back, we stop. That is allowed and part of the training.
Physical adaptations
Technology often solves the problem: a different seat position, a steering knob, hand controls for accelerator and brake, a left hand accelerator pedal or an accelerator ring. I drive an adapted Honda so you can try these directly.
In your own vehicle
If your car is already adapted, we train in it. That way you practise exactly the controls you will use every day.
Pace
Some people need two sessions, others ten. Both are normal. Get in touch first and we will work out a sensible first step together.
