Even if you already hold a Führerausweis (Swiss driving licence): after an illness, an accident or with an impairment, every route starts with a fitness to drive assessment at the Strassenverkehrsamt (cantonal road traffic office). It looks at what is still possible, which conversions are needed and whether there is enough strength in your arm or leg. Without that assessment we are not allowed to drive together, not even with a Lernfahrausweis (learner permit).
Many people do not know this, because they have been driving for years. Call me before you set anything in motion anywhere. I will explain step by step what is coming, whom you contact and what happens afterwards. It costs nothing and commits you to nothing.
In the technische Eignungsabklärung (technical fitness to drive assessment) the Strassenverkehrsamt checks how much strength there is in your arms and legs and which controls you need, in Bern also in a simulator. The traffic expert then issues a Verfügung (formal ruling) that allows you to drive with a driving instructor, private practice drives with an accompanying person are not possible.

Learning to drive with adapted controls
Mobility means taking part: shopping, work, therapy, seeing friends. That is what this is about. We set the car up so that you can operate it safely and we build things up step by step. We drive the same car as every other learner with us, it is simply set up to suit you.
Hand controls and throttle ring
Accelerator and brake can be operated with a throttle ring on the steering wheel and a hand brake lever, entirely without pedals. We set everything up for you before the first session and adjust it as soon as you notice what suits you.

If your right leg will not play along, you drive with the accelerator pedal on the left. For single hand operation there are two different multifunction knobs, so that indicators, lights and wipers stay within reach while your hand rests on the steering wheel.
Driving lessons in your own car
If your car is already converted for you, we drive in it. You then learn from the start with exactly the controls you will use every day. In your car your own insurance applies, the all-risk cover of the driving school does not. Get in touch beforehand so we can sort this out together.
Retraining after illness or an accident
Most people who come to us have been driving for years. After an accident, a stroke or with a progressive illness it is not about learning to drive again, it is about doing it differently. Your experience stays, we only change the controls.

Calm and experienced instruction
Step-by-step introduction
First you get to know the adapted vehicle while stationary: we set up the seating position, hand controls and steering aid precisely for you and you try out every control calmly. Then come the first attempts on a quiet area without traffic, until moving off, braking and steering feel secure. Only then do we move into traffic step by step, first in quiet neighbourhoods, later on larger roads and finally on the motorway.
A trusting learning atmosphere
You set the pace. If an exercise does not work, we take a step back instead of repeating it until it does. Mistakes are part of it and with me they are not commented on, they are explained.

Good to know
- Sessions: We always drive in sessions of 90 minutes. Mobility12 equals six sessions, Freedom24 twelve, Liberty36 eighteen.
- Without a package: A session of 90 minutes costs CHF 210, which equals CHF 105 per 45 minute lesson.
- Price: A lesson in handicap training costs CHF 105 instead of CHF 100. The vehicle is set up individually for you, and adapting it before every session takes time.
- Vehicle: We drive our adapted Honda with an accelerator pedal on the left, a throttle ring, a hand brake lever and single hand operation. It is the same car every other learner with us drives.
- After every lesson: We record what we practised and what comes next. You can read the record in the learning journal of the learning app.
- Insurance: In the school car the all-risk cover is included in every lesson. If we drive in your own converted car, your own vehicle insurance applies.
- Ask first: Not every adaptation is possible in our car. Check with us before booking whether it fits.
- Administration: If you start training for your first Führerausweis (Swiss driving licence) with us, you pay a one-off CHF 150. It does not apply when you retrain with a licence you already hold.
- Not included: Not included if you are getting your Führerausweis for the first time: first aid course, traffic theory course, Lernfahrausweis (learner permit), test fees and the WAB course, which has to be taken after the first twelve months following the issue of your licence. When you retrain, these points do not apply.
- Cancellations: Free of charge up to 48 hours before the session. In case of illness or accident we find a solution.
- Validity: Paid lessons do not expire and can be transferred to another person.
- Stopping early: If you stop the training, you get the remaining amount back. Lessons already taken are charged at the single price of CHF 105 and the package discount no longer applies. We charge a one-off CHF 50 for the settlement. The CHF 150 administration fee is not refunded.
- Payment: TWINT, invoice or card.

What is checked during the fitness to drive assessment?
The official term is technische Eignungsabklärung (technical fitness to drive assessment). The Strassenverkehrsamt (cantonal road traffic office) looks at what is possible with your impairment: is there enough strength in the legs, enough strength in the arms, which controls do you need. In Bern there is a simulator you can sit in, so you can calmly try out the different controls without driving.
Afterwards the traffic expert issues a Verfügung (formal ruling). If you already hold a Führerausweis (Swiss driving licence), that ruling allows you to drive with a driving instructor. If you are getting your licence for the first time, you receive the Lernfahrausweis (learner permit) with a note that practice drives are only allowed with a driving instructor. Private practice drives with an accompanying person are then not possible.

Yes, in an advisory role. I advise you on choosing a vehicle and recommend companies I know. The conversion is planned and carried out by the company you commission yourself. On request I come along to the meeting so the adaptations suit the way you drive.
How many lessons do I need?
That depends on your experience and on the adaptation. Many people start with Mobility12, which is six sessions of 90 minutes. After the first sessions we tell you honestly what is realistic.

A session of 90 minutes costs CHF 210, which equals CHF 105 per 45 minute lesson. Packages cost CHF 1200, CHF 2370 and CHF 3410.
