The VKU is defined by law and has the same structure at every driving school: eight hours of traffic theory, in four blocks of two hours or on two days of four hours. What you learn is not theory to memorise, it is the basis for how you will think in traffic later on.
Traffic sense and perception
How to read a situation correctly, where to look and how to spot hazards before they develop. Plus how visual acuity, field of vision and light affect your driving.
The others on the road
How children, older people, cyclists and motorcyclists behave, how to read their behaviour and how to react when someone makes a mistake. Plus weather and seasons.
Vehicle and physics
Speed, lane choice, stopping distance, load and the forces acting on a vehicle. Why a car travelling twice as fast does not take twice as long to stop.
Responsibility and motives
Why you drive the way you drive, and what alcohol, tiredness and distraction actually do. Plus modern assistance systems, what they can do and what they cannot.
At the end you receive a course confirmation, which you need to register for the practical test.
When do you take the VKU?
Today, until the end of 2026: you need your learner permit and you must have passed the theory exam. After that you take the VKU. It is valid indefinitely and does not expire.
From 1 January 2027 the order is reversed: the VKU has to be completed before the theory exam. Without the VKU confirmation you can no longer register for the theory exam. In addition, VKU content can be examined in the theory exam, and driver assistance and automation systems become a fixed part of the course.
If you start your training before 1 January 2027 and take the VKU under the current model, the course is credited to you. Blocks you have already attended remain valid.

Courses take place at Bubenbergplatz 8 in Bern, not at Wankdorf station like the driving lessons.

After the VKU it is time to get on the road. With me, a driving session lasts ninety minutes, because that is long enough for things to stick. We start where you are and build from there.
