Driving again after illness: assessment and build up
The medical side first
After certain illnesses driving is temporarily not permitted or subject to conditions. That assessment is medical, not something a driving school decides. Clarify it before the first lesson and you save yourself detours.
What may have changed
- Reaction time
- Attention over longer distances
- Field of vision
- Strength and mobility on one side of the body
- The effect of new medication
A four stage build up
Stage 1: Controls with the car stationary, seat position, mirrors, aids if needed. Stage 2: Quiet residential streets, twenty to thirty minutes. Stage 3: City traffic, roundabouts, lane selection. Stage 4: Motorway, darkness, rain.
We only move on once the previous stage feels effortless.
Short report
If a doctor or an authority needs feedback, I can write a short, factual assessment on request.
