The Kontrollfahrt in Bern: how to prepare

What the Kontrollfahrt is

An assessment drive of about an hour with an examiner from the road traffic office. It judges whether you can handle Swiss traffic safely. It is not a beginner driving test, but the standard is clear.

What is watched closely

• Observation: mirrors and shoulder checks must be visible, not just intended
• Priority on roundabouts and when selecting lanes
• Speed in 30 km/h zones and shared spaces
• Distance when overtaking cyclists
• Priority from the right in residential areas, unfamiliar to many newcomers
• Flow: hesitating is as much a fault as pushing

The most common reason for a negative result

Rarely driving errors in the narrow sense. Usually a lack of outward communication: no visible shoulder check, late indicating, unclear lane choice.

Preparation in two sessions

Session 1: An honest review on the typical assessment routes around Bern. Session 2: A full rehearsal including a debrief.

A session lasts 90 minutes. One attempt only means it is worth taking an honest look beforehand.
