The medical check from 75: what to expect

    Stefan Plüss1 min

    The framework

In Switzerland, licence holders aged 75 and over must attend a medical examination every two years. The invitation comes from the road traffic office.

    What is assessed

    • Vision, in particular field of view and contrast
    • Hearing
    • Mobility of head, neck and legs
    • Reaction and attention
    • Medication that can affect fitness to drive

    How to prepare

Bring an up to date list of your medication. Have your glasses checked beforehand; that is the most common and most easily fixed issue. And arrive rested.

    If doubts remain

If questions remain after the examination, an assessment drive may be ordered. That is not a driving test, it is an appraisal of your current practice behind the wheel.

    Voluntary driver training

Many of my clients book a session before the examination to build confidence. We drive for 90 minutes, in your own car or in mine, and look at where you look, roundabouts, reversing and following distances. A short written report is available on request.

Call me if you would like to know where you stand.

Last updated: August 2026. The binding information is published by the Road Traffic and Navigation Office of the Canton of Bern.
