Passing the Swiss theory exam: a simple study plan

Why people fail

Rarely a question of ability, usually a question of method. Clicking through question banks works only until a question is worded differently.

A three week plan

Week 1, foundations. Right of way, signs, road markings. Twenty minutes a day, one topic a day.

Week 2, understanding. Go back through every question you got wrong and write one sentence explaining why the correct answer is correct. That sentence matters more than the answer.

Week 3, exam mode. Timed simulations only. Aim for three clean runs in a row.

Common traps

• Right of way when two cars turn left at once
• Stopping distances in wet conditions
• Signs that are advisory rather than binding
• Questions with more than one correct answer

On the day

Bring your ID, arrive early, read calmly. If a question does not make sense straight away, read it again in full. Most mistakes come from skimming.

After the exam

Once you pass theory you apply for the learner permit and start lessons. People who are already driving understand the theory much faster, because the situations become real.
