The VKU course in Bern: format, content and timing
What the VKU is
The traffic theory course covers eight hours of traffic theory, in four blocks of two hours or on two days of four hours. It is compulsory for anyone taking a first category B licence in Switzerland.

- Reaction time, braking distance, speed
- Environmentally aware and anticipatory driving
- How to behave towards other road users
- Fitness to drive: alcohol, tiredness, medication
When to take it
Today, until the end of 2026: you need your learner permit and you must have passed the theory exam. After that you take the VKU. It is valid indefinitely and does not expire.
From 1 January 2027 the order is reversed: the VKU has to be completed before the theory exam. Without the VKU confirmation you can no longer register for the theory exam. In addition, VKU content can be examined in the theory exam, and driver assistance and automation systems become a fixed part of the course.
If you start your training before 1 January 2027 and take the VKU under the current model, the course is credited to you. Blocks you have already attended remain valid.

What it is not
It does not replace driving lessons or the theory exam. It is the bridge between the two.
