Driving in later life: eight honest questions
Stefan Plüss1 min
Eight questions
- Do you now avoid driving at night?
- Are you surprised by cyclists or pedestrians more often than before?
- Has reversing become harder because turning your head hurts?
- Do other drivers sound the horn at you more often?
- Have you had minor damage while manoeuvring in the last two years?
- Do you feel tired after thirty minutes at the wheel?
- Do you take medication that makes you drowsy?
- Do you avoid routes you used to drive without a second thought?
Two or more yes answers do not mean you have to stop. They mean a session is worth booking.
What can be solved with equipment
A great deal: seat position, mirror adjustment, an additional mirror, better glasses, a car with a clearer view out, actually using the reversing camera.
For family members
Talk about situations, not about age. "I noticed something while you were reversing last week" gets further than "you are too old to drive". Neutral driver training takes a lot of pressure out of those conversations.
